Why a National Board, and why now?

Our expanded vision to grow and be there for kids in new cities.

When you think of what kids and their families are going through, how hospital partners have championed our programs, and how our unique approach transforms the children’s hospital experience for kids and their families – it’s clear that Bedside Magic works.

Bedside Magic is a unique and effective program, meeting kids where they are at in order to help them re-engage, find joy, and get stronger. It allows parents to see their child laugh again, which helps them remember how their child was before their disease. All of this brings critical hope.

Bedside Magic works, and we want to grow to help more kids in need.

If you’re excited by the idea of leveraging your network and fundraising connections to help us expand – not just to more kids, but to more hospitals in new cities across the nation – then this may be a fit for you.

Members on our Board of Directors are just as important as our frontline Hospital Magician volunteers. Each work to ensure that Open Heart Magic consistently provides amazing experience to kids in hospitals. The Board is so pivotal to our mission. The best leaders make this possible, and it’s why we’re pursuing more to expand this cause for kids.

What makes an excellent Board Member?

We don’t need connections to children’s hospitals. We have sound legal Pro-Bono counsel. We don’t need ideas of where we can do magic unrelated to children’s hospitals – our mission is clear and focused.

What we need are leaders with the capability to bring key financial resources to support our mission of helping sick kids and their families in hospitals. This is what will help us build a national organization and start seriously considering new cities.

What does key financial resources mean?

Open Heart Magic has a black-tie gala every November at The Casino Club, it’s an inspiring event and a great way to introduce new people to the organization, while growing revenue, building awareness, and creating future opportunities for expansion. Some participation in this gala – along with general fundraising by-laws – are Board requirements to make sure that every Board Member shares responsibility. Many hands make light work, and providing the same level of participation is one of the many reasons that makes this group so special.

Organizations can only get so far if only a handful of folks are carrying the load. This isn’t the case with our Board of Directors, with high expectations, our Members are collectively work to move this ship forward.

We look at three things when considering candidate nominations:

  • Your commitment to the organization shown by your ability to deliver on the requirements – especially fundraising.
    To build a national platform, there is a fundraising requirement for all Board Members. This structure will help us reach kids in a new city, while allowing the public to support each personalized interaction. For example, the Open Heart Magic Board raised over $410,000 in 2023 – helping pay the structural costs of running an organization, such as volunteer recruitment and training in three states, and the cost of having an operational staff. OHM is well run especially considering the sensitivity of working with kids and their families in an ever changing medical environment. OHM is in a unique position, the foundation has been built, we are ready for the firewood to kindle this fire to new cities and children’s hospitals to help more kids.
  • Your background and role to help us elevate our Board of Directors.
    Everything within a charity is evaluated for credibility. Who serves on our Board is also evaluated by those who want to give or get involved. This is, of course, malleable, but it is important.
  • Your ability to share the same focus in our mission and Board.
    Our focus is clear – helping kids in hospitals directly at their bedsides. You would need to understand and support our current mission focus and strategy for consistent, non-rushed sustainable expansion to new cities that offer the best chance at growing and building a legacy.

This is a very important role – you could be responsible for expanding Bedside Magic to a new city.

We’ve been able to help more kids and do many more things than other like-sized charities because of innovative operational modeling, smart financial planning, and trusted hard work in the children’s hospital niche. We need the right person for this role to expand this model.
